The Art of Expression

2010.08.16

An art installation I did from last semester is up! I finished it a few minutes ago. The Hybrid Art class was an amazing experience.

The Art of Expression was a final project for the semester long course Hybrid Art at Brown University. The project examined a relationship between the non-representational and communication. After the project was over the installation space became a example of memory signifying that an “event” had occured. Zach and Arlando send thanks to Professors Richard Fishman & Ian Gonsher for allowing them to use, deconstruct, and break various fire codes in the installation space. The students would also like to send a special thanks to Jay Gidwitz for his videowork and the Hybrid Art class for their critiques and dedication.

Without further ado:

Rene Parola’s Op Art

2010.08.11

Yes!! Op Art.

Parola’s “Op Art” a lot about what Op Art is, Op Art’s goals, and how Op Art functions off of the psychological basis of the Gestalt school of psychology. The end of the book is neat because Parola shows some tricks of the trade to making your own Op Art. Op Art is great to me because it is just so visually jarring and” honest.” The form of the matter on the 2D surface becomes the activator. Op Art sums up Mie’s Van Der Rohe’s idea that “Less is More.” Unfortunately by the end of the book I had a headache and a weird feeling becoming in my brain. I wouldn’t mind having a large Op Art painting hanging in my bathroom or living room.

It is what it is!

Some Vasarely, Bridget Riley:

Vasarely, yo. by Dave Edwards

Vasarely!! Yes. More. This work reminds of casualty.

I wonder how Op Art, plays out into the theory of designing Objects and Forms. Essentially Op Art is gestalt psychology, so I guess the question can be rephrased as such: I wonder how Gestalt Psychology plays into the Design of objects. I think it would become very helpful in multiflunctional approaches to design and ensuring that customers can easily understand how to piece objects together, if you design Objects of the principals of gestalt.

I made this in photoshop yesterday. I am not sure if I should make photoshop tutorials for the website to show people how I make the effects I do.

Lately I have been in love with Michael Heizer. The Unknown Hipster tipped me off. I think it is a great example of “Life as art, or Art as Life.” This statement is peppered through out alot of art history books. Oscar Wilde supported the Life as art, whilst Plato would support Art as life (and he would ban art in his society to avoid the mimesis of art, read the Republic…)

Sample of Heizer’s work:

So, one day I was walking up Waterman Street and I saw construction workers digging a large hole in the ground and then I thought of Heizer’s work…

redesigning a bit

2010.06.08

hey reader(s). trying to make the site easier to read, more marketable, and have . this week i read a marketing book, targeting at how to market your blogs and the author made me realize somethings i would have not otherwise realized.

ive been asking myself lately what is art? and what makes good art, good art? this video of marc gonzales skateboarding through the German Museum im Mönchengladbach on Dec. 13th 1998 intrigues me to no in. i guess it grandly was a publicity stunt but there is something graceful about the whole thing, although the quality of the video is the greatest (due to its age none the less.)

i even like his outfit too, it almost suggest that he is the blank canvas and that the skateboarding and environments will leave their marks on him.
